In a week of double success for the county, we are delighted to report our mens team were victorious in the Northern Counties Championship at Bishop Auckland. The event is a very difficult format, being 36 holes of strokeplay, with every one of the team of six scores to count.
The morning saw some impressive scoring, and Northumberland took the lead on a 5 under par total, with Lancashire on 1 under. The afternoon play from our team was exceptional, and the scores were nip and tuck with Durham, the home county, all the way through to almost the very end. Lancashire stayed strong and it came down to Luke Kelly, to deliver some exceptional golf, resulting in him winning the best individual 36 hole overall score. It was only in the last two holes that Durham fell away, which meant that Lancashire finished on 8 under par, Durham on 1 under, crowning us champions. After the very close result last year, with us missing out by one shot, the performance and result was well deserved and the team now qualify for the National County Finals, which will be played at St Enedoc GC on 26th-28th September. Let's hope we can repeat the performance of 2022 which saw us crowned national county champions!
Also on Wednesday 6th August, the Northern Counties Girls Jamboree concluded, which is a two day event consisting of both stableford and matchplay. The event is for the younger girls to get an introduction into county team events and many of our current womens and girls squad have previously played in the team.
The encouragement and support throughout the two days, for all girls playing from every county, is great to watch, and the event is certainly one of our favourite in the calendar.
Our girls performed incredibly well, to take the title after some very competitive play, with some of the matches on day two going down to the 18th hole. The event has a complex scoring system, so it is only at the very end you normally find out who has won but well done to our Lancashire Girls who came out on top, winning the Jamboree Trophy!
We are very proud of our girls and we are also very grateful to all the volunteers and coaches who devote so much time and effort into bringing girls into the game of golf and nurturing their development. Without their contribution, success like this would not be possible.
Well done Lancashire!
