He is a Past Captain of Bolton Golf Club (2002) and is also a member of Royal Lytham & St.Annes, West Hill, Trevose and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St.Andrews.

He has served on the R&A Rules of Golf and Championship Committees being Championship Chairman in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

He is a former county player having represented Lancashire nine times between 1966 and 1973.
